Amethyst is a purple variety of Quartz that has become one of the most popular and well-known crystals in the mineral kingdom. Amethyst gains its color from gamma irradiation and trace amounts of Iron. This crystal gained its name from the Greek word "Amethystos" which translates to "not intoxicated".
